US Public Fears Weapon Transport

Washington, Jul 3 (Prensa Latina) Department of Defense plans to transport deadly chemicals for disposal on US highways clash with Congress and NGOs that consider it too dangerous.

Congress has urged to destroy the deadly chemicals to honor the 1997 International Chemical Weapons Convention, which sets late 2017 as a deadline.

According to USA Today, the Pentagon claims it is impossible to comply unless some of the hazardous chemicals are shipped to Alabama, Arkansas, Utah and Oregon.

Craig Williams, director of the organization Chemical Weapons Working Group of Kentucky, called it shocking and irresponsible to carry such chemical loads on US highways due to "the risks of terrorist threats."

The Army has already destroyed 55 percent of its chemical arsenal stockpiled at eight bases nationwide, including nerve and mustard gas-loaded missiles.
