Army contractor Parsons Corp. has notified the State Department of Workforce Development that it will begin closing operations in Newport starting on Saturday, letting the first of 412 workers go within 60 days.

The radioactive material disposal specialist earlier this week said it has finished three years of work on destroying deadly nerve agent stored in western Indiana called VX and was moving ahead to dismantle the equipment built for the billion-dollar project.

The complete closure, according to the state Web site, wouldn't take effect until 2010.
